A video call with a licensed veterinarian can answer a lot of questions, but it cannot do everything an in-person exam can. Understanding exactly what Vetzi’s telehealth service can and cannot provide helps you make the right decision for your pet, especially when timing matters.
A video call with a licensed veterinarian can answer a lot of questions, but it cannot do everything an in-person exam can. Understanding exactly what Vetzi’s telehealth service can and cannot provide helps you make the right decision for your pet, especially in situations where timing matters.
This page explains the scope of our telehealth services and the legal and clinical limits that apply to virtual veterinary care in Florida.
According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, a veterinarian-client-patient relationship cannot be established solely through telephonic or electronic means in every state, though Florida law does permit this under specific conditions described below. Regardless of the legal framework, a video consultation cannot replace a physical exam, bloodwork, imaging, or hands-on assessment when your pet’s condition requires it.
Our veterinarians are trained to recognize when a concern falls outside what telehealth can safely address, and they will tell you directly when an in-person visit or emergency care is the right next step rather than continuing a virtual consultation.
Florida’s Providing Equity in Telehealth Services Act, effective July 1, 2024, allows a licensed Florida veterinarian to establish a veterinarian-client-patient relationship through a live video visit. This changed how virtual veterinary care can legally work in our state, but the law includes specific limits that shape what we can offer.
Under Florida Statute 474.2021, a veterinarian practicing telehealth may not prescribe controlled substances, compounded medications, or drugs intended for extralabel use without first conducting an in-person physical exam. Prescriptions issued through a virtual visit are also limited in duration, and certain medications require an in-person exam regardless of the circumstances. This means not every prescription request can be fulfilled through a Vetzi consultation, and our veterinarians will let you know when your pet needs to be seen in person to continue treatment. For a full picture of how a typical visit works and what to expect, our FAQs page walks through the process in more detail.
Telehealth through Vetzi tends to work well for concerns like mild digestive upset, skin irritation, behavior questions, medication questions, and general wellness guidance, particularly when your pet is eating, drinking, and breathing normally. Our veterinarian founder has described handling many of these day to day concerns virtually, from anxiety and chronic cough to minor issues that come up outside of normal clinic hours. You can read more about her clinical background and philosophy on her veterinarian bio page.
Telehealth is not a substitute for emergency care. If your pet is having trouble breathing, is unresponsive, is bleeding heavily, has ingested something toxic, or shows any other signs of a medical emergency, please seek in-person veterinary care immediately rather than scheduling a virtual consultation.
We built Vetzi around the principle that clinical judgment, not convenience alone, should guide every recommendation. If a veterinarian determines during your consultation that your pet needs an in-person exam, bloodwork, imaging, or emergency care, they will tell you directly and help you understand the appropriate next step. Our editorial guidelines describe the same principle behind everything we publish on this website.
Nothing on this website, including our blog content, service pages, or general guidance, is intended to replace an individualized veterinary exam for your specific pet. If you are ever unsure whether your pet’s situation is appropriate for telehealth, the safest choice is to consult a veterinarian directly rather than rely on general information.
If you are unsure whether your pet’s situation is a good fit for a virtual visit, our team can help you figure out the right next step before you book. Our About Vetzi page explains more about how our platform works and the services we offer across Florida.
If your pet needs care today, you can book a video consultation with a Vetzi veterinarian, and our team will help determine whether your pet’s concern can be addressed virtually or needs in-person attention.
